This year would have seen the award-winning Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, celebrate it’s 18th year. Sadly the current Covid-19 crisis has put paid to that – along with most other things. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t be celebrating another year of cracking crime fiction. Today the longlist was announced for this year’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year.
The award celebrates excellence, originality, and the very best in crime fiction from UK and Irish authors. This year there are 18 titles that have made the longlist and looking down it I already half of them so maybe this is my cue to crack on and read them!
I’ve listed the titles below (I always like to add a bit of temptation to everyone’s life) or you can jump straight to voting here.
The shortlist will be announced on June 8th and the winner will be revealed at a virtual awards ceremony on July, 31.
For other, like myself that were looking forward to this year’s cancelled festival, there is always next year and the dates have been confirmed as 22-25 July 2021 – see you next year!

Now nosy me wants to know what you picked. I’ve only actually read one of them, but have another eight and seven of them I bought so I should prioritise my reading. I’m currently reading The Quaker by Liam McIlvanney which was on last year’s short list.
