Last month I uttered the words “miraculously this month I managed to rein in on the book buying. I’d like to think that this might be a sign of things to come” – it wasn’t!! Book buying back with a vengeance this month, though in my defense (not that I really need to justify it) I did treat myself a little bit for Christmas in advance of the monetary gifts that normally come my way. So as there’s lot’s to get through best crack on!
What I bought this month
Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce
![Miss Benson's Beetle: An uplifting story of female friendship against the odds by [Rachel Joyce]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/510JjToreSL._SY346_.jpg)
It is 1950. In a devastating moment of clarity, Margery Benson abandons her dead-end job and advertises for an assistant to accompany her on an expedition. She is going to travel to the other side of the world to search for a beetle that may or may not exist.
Enid Pretty, in her unlikely pink travel suit, is not the companion Margery had in mind. And yet together they will be drawn into an adventure that will exceed every expectation. They will risk everything, break all the rules, and at the top of a red mountain, discover their best selves.
This is a story that is less about what can be found than the belief it might be found; it is an intoxicating adventure story but it is also about what it means to be a woman and a tender exploration of a friendship that defies all boundaries.

Remember Me by Mario Escobar
![Remember Me: A Spanish Civil War Novel by [Mario Escobar]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51Mf4U-1czL._SY346_.jpg)
Amid the shadows of war, one family faces an impossible choice that will change their lives forever.
Madrid, 1934. Though the Spanish Civil War has not yet begun, the streets of Madrid have become dangerous for thirteen-year-old Marco Alcalde and his younger sisters, Isabel and Ana. When Marco’s parents align themselves against General Franco and his fascist regime, they have no inkling that their ideals will endanger them and everyone they love—nor do they predict the violence that is to come.
When the Mexican government promises protection to the imperiled children of Spain, the Alcaldes do what they believe is best: send their children, unaccompanied, across the ocean to the city of Morelia—a place they’ve never seen or imagined. Marco promises to look after his sisters in Mexico until their family can be reunited in Spain, but what ensues is a harrowing journey and a series of heartbreaking events. As the growing children work to care for themselves and each other, they feel their sense of home, family, and identity slipping further and further away. And as their memories of Spain fade and the news from abroad grows more grim, they begin to wonder if they will ever see their parents again or the glittering streets of the home they once loved.
Based upon the true stories of the Children of Morelia, Mario Escobar’s Remember Me—now available for the first time in English—explores the agony of war and paints a poignant portrait of one family’s sacrificial love and endurance.

Inside the rusted gates, and through a large wooden front door dripping with sun-kissed flowers, Callie can’t decide if she’s more astonished by her new home or her first encounter with the mysterious young groundskeeper, Tommaso.
Wandering the villa barefoot at night, Callie finds a diary belonging to a woman named Elisa, wrapped in faded blue ribbon and hidden in her birthmother’s antique wardrobe. Callie is certain that her and Elisa’s lives are somehow connected, and that the truth about her family is hidden somewhere within the diary’s crinkled yellow pages. Close to Where the Heart Gives Out by Malcom Alexander
![Close to Where the Heart Gives Out: A Year in the Life of an Orkney Doctor by [Malcolm Alexander]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/516eFS0DWJL._SY346_.jpg)
In his forties, Malcolm gave up his job in suburban Glasgow when a persistent seed that had been growing inside him started to bloom, disrupting the foundations of his life. When he saw the job advert, ‘urgent: island doctor needed’, he applied immediately. What he didn’t anticipate was how much Orkney would affect his family, for better or worse.
In stories that range from the humorous to the deeply moving, Malcolm describes what it’s like adjusting to life without modern conveniences and to the extreme – and constantly changing – weather; and what it means to be providing the best medical care to the local population with limited resources. Which often includes the wildlife as well …
Malcolm’s journey evokes the awe that the Orkney landscape can inspire, as well as the challenges of island life and the demons that the dark, cold winter months can give birth to. Gripping and beautifully written, Close to Where the Heart Gives Out reminds us of the importance of listening to our heart, as well as to the rhythms of the landscape.

New Doctor at Chestnut House/Christmas at the Country Practice by Sharon Booth
NEW DOCTOR AT CHESTNUT HOUSE
Is home a place—or a person?
Anna’s about to leave Bramblewick behind. She’s due to marry her childhood sweetheart in a few weeks and then she’ll be heading to Kent and a whole new life.
Connor’s a new arrival in Bramblewick. He’s bringing with him a whole lot of baggage, and he’s doubtful that this small village on the Yorkshire Moors is the ideal place for him and his daughter, Gracie.
It’s not easy for Anna, watching Connor move into her family home and take over from her beloved father at the local surgery, but she’s determined to help him settle in and adjust to rural life, so that the villagers get the doctor they deserve. Connor’s not convinced. This country practice is very different to what he’s used to, and the locals have some strange expectations of their GP. Protective of Gracie and hiding behind self-constructed barriers, Connor struggles to adapt to life in Bramblewick.
Can Anna convince him that this is the place where he and Gracie can finally find happiness? And can she convince herself that leaving Bramblewick is the right move for her?
CHRISTMAS AT THE COUNTRY PRACTICE
Christmas has arrived in Bramblewick, along with plenty of snow and festive good cheer. The village is gearing up for the Christmas Eve wedding of popular GP Connor Blake, and much-loved receptionist Anna. At the Bramblewick Surgery, a new GP, Riley MacDonald, is working alongside Connor, and he’s proving to be highly efficient and organised.
When Nell Williamson, proprietor of Spill the Beans café and bakery in the village, first sets eyes on Riley, it’s love at first sight. Nell has always believed that she would know “the one” when she met him, and she’s convinced that Riley is the man she’s been waiting for.
Riley, on the other hand, is a hardened cynic. Having survived a humiliating broken engagement, he’s keeping well away from relationships, and is confused by Nell’s attentions. Her every attempt to attract him pushes him further away, convincing her friends she’s on a hiding to nothing, even though he turns into a clumsy mess whenever Nell’s around.
Deciding she’s a control freak who should be avoided at all costs, Riley makes a serious error of judgement which could cost her dearly.
As Christmas approaches, best man Riley and bridesmaid Nell are further apart than ever. Can the two of them reach an understanding before their friends’ big day, or will it be the most awkward wedding in Bramblewick’s history?

The Reacher Guy by Heather Martin

Lee Child is the enigmatic powerhouse behind the bestselling Jack Reacher novels. With millions of devoted fans across the globe, and over a hundred million copies of his books sold in more than forty languages, he is that rarity, a writer who is lauded by critics and revered by readers. And yet curiously little has been written about the man himself.
The Reacher Guy is a compelling and authoritative portrait of the artist as a young man, refracted through the life of his fictional avatar, Jack Reacher. Through parallels drawn between Child and his literary creation, it tells the story of how a boy from Birmingham with a ferocious appetite for reading grew up to become a high-flying TV executive, before coming full circle and establishing himself as the strongest brand in publishing.
Heather Martin explores Child’s lifelong fascination with America, and shows how the Reacher novels fed and fuelled this obsession, shedding light on the opaque process of publishing a novel along the way. Drawing on her conversations and correspondence with Child over a number of years, as well as interviews with his friends, teachers and colleagues, she forensically pieces together his life, traversing back through the generations to Northern Ireland and County Durham, and following the trajectory of his extraordinary career via New York and Hollywood until the climactic moment when, in 2020, having written a continuous series of twenty-four books, he finally breaks free of his fictional creation.

So that was my month. A lot of lovely books added to the reading list and a good reading tally for me. Given my concentration levels I set my Goodreads challenge at 40 books this year. As I write this I’ve read 47, definitely helped by my splurge of festive reads. It all augers well for next year, which is just as well given the number of books I buy! Hope you all had a good bookish month as well.
The next time I’ll speak to you will be next year, so wishing you all the best for a safe, happy and healthy 2021. Just remember, whatever the year has in store – we always have books.
Happy Reading!!

I’m hoping the vaccine also includes an elixir of youth so I can live longer to read them all. I really need to stop buying, but there’s just too many good books. Plus it all adds to an author’s income so it’s all good xx

Away with the penguins made me cry! I thought it was brilliant, and also loved the authors second book, Ellie and the harp maker. She writes superb stories. Really enjoyed the Glendale Hall series too, and The Winter garden was pretty good. Too many books, not enough time! A Happy New Year to you, Jill.
